Friend, in my more than 32 years serving Washington state in the U.S. Senate, I never thought something like this would happen.
The video of my colleague, U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla, being brutally tackled, thrown to the floor, and handcuffed at a Department of Homeland Security press conference in his own home state is a horrendous wake-up call to the urgent threats facing our democracy.
Why? Because he dared to speak up to Trump's Secretary of Homeland Security and demand answers for the millions of constituents he serves.
In short, because he did his job.
We were chosen by the people of our states to speak up, to ask questions, and to be their voice in the halls of power. We use our voices and our votes to make change, not violence. That's what democracy is all about. So if that voice is stifled, so is the people's.
And now more than ever, American democracy is not guaranteed.
Every senator, regardless of party, must call out the administration on this. If we let this happen to any one of us, it can eventually happen to all of us.
And if this democracy is going to survive Trump's increasingly authoritarian tactics, then none of us can stay silent. Don't be intimidated. Speak up. Use your voice. Stand up for our democracy.
It is the greatest honor of my life to be your voice in the other Washington. Thank you for your solidarity.

Patty Murray is determined to bring the Trump administration to account for its abuses of executive power in furtherance of his pro-billionaire, anti-democratic agenda.
But against a red Senate majority funded by billionaires like Elon Musk, she won't have the resources to succeed or protect Washington state's working families without your support.
