When I ran for Congress in 2018, I had never been a political candidate before, so I didn't do politics the way things had always been done.
Political consultants asked me what I wanted to campaign on. When I said that my top issue was housing (after all, I had been a foreclosure fighter during the financial crisis), they said that that wasn't really an issue that politicians focus on. I did it anyway.
After hearing me talk about being a minivan-driving single mom, another consultant commented that it would be so great if I actually had the van, so we could use it as a prop in a photoshoot. (Dude, it's not a prop; it's actually what I used to drive my three kids to school!)
When it came to financing my campaign, I committed from Day One to reject donations from corporate PACs, and despite doubts from some operatives, I've stuck to my promise.
All of this—doing politics differently and relentlessly focusing on what families need—is possible because of emails like this one and supporters like you.
When I sat down in those hearing rooms to ask tough questions of the witnesses before Congress, I knew I had the power of a grassroots movement behind me.
Ahead of our June fundraising deadline, when we'll have to publicly report how much we've raised, I need your help again. Can you chip in $5 to show everyone that we can campaign differently than the way things have always been done—and win?
