My why
When I was asked who's inspired me the most, I had an easy answer: my kids.
I wake up every morning and think about the kind of future my kids will have.
Unless we make housing affordable, my kids won't be able to live in California when they grow up. Without climate action, many of our communities will not be livable for my kids and their peers. And without a Governor who will stand up to Trump—or any wannabe dictator—my kids will have fewer rights than I did at their age.
Running for office isn't always easy. But when I think about the work I can do to secure a better future for my kids and millions of California children, I'm so inspired to do this work.
But I can't do it without you.
Thanks,
Katie

Don’t doubt if you can make a difference
The most common reason I hear for Americans not getting involved in politics is not that they don't care—it's that they question whether they can make a difference.
Let's be crystal clear: your voice matters.
Before I ran for office as a first-time candidate in 2018, I had doubts myself. I kept waiting for someone else to give me the opportunity to serve my community, but with all the terrible things happening in the first Trump administration, I decided I was done waiting.
With Trump and his cronies now emboldened, the same calling and urgency I felt in 2018 is even greater today.
If you're wondering who is going to save us from the mess we're in, stop looking around and start looking in a mirror.
Your voice has power—that's exactly why extremists like Donald Trump are so invested in trying to silence it through chaos and intimidation.
Join a peaceful protest. Volunteer in your community. Make sure your friends, neighbors, and social media followers know what Trump is doing. Donate to a candidate or cause you believe in (I hope you'll consider my campaign for governor!).
You won't be waiting long to see the difference you can make.

Some reflections on the school year
I just finished my first term back in the classroom after my time in Congress, and my kids just wrapped up their school year, so I've been thinking again about the importance of teaching and learning.
In many ways, serving in elected office is pretty similar to being a professor.
I learned how to question (sometimes incompetent) witnesses in hearings because as a teacher, I had learned how to get an answer out of hungover students who hadn't done the reading. I had also learned that if you only call on the highest, loudest hands, you'll only ever hear from a certain subset of people.
If elected officials are doing the job right, they should be constantly learning—from colleagues, experts, stakeholders, and everyday people—about the challenges communities face and possible solutions. And, they should be teaching: bringing people together, building political support, and keeping constituents up to date about what's happening in government.
That's the kind of mindset I'll bring to my work as governor. I'm going to be in communities, touring, listening, and learning. I want to bring all voices to the table to tackle California's biggest challenges.
Happy summer!
