What our CEO saw in Sudan

Sudan is facing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. War has forced families out of their homes, children out of school and is pushing entire communities to the brink of starvation.  Despite the staggering need, Sudan remains one of the world’s most overlooked emergencies. Just 25% of its humanitarian response has been funded, leaving millions of children without the support they need.  Recently, our CEO, Janti Soeripto, traveled to Sudan to witness the crisis firsthand, meet families living through it and see how compassionate supporters are helping children survive. Please take a moment to read a firsthand account of her trip to Sudan.   During this trip, Janti spent time at one of the few open pharmacies in the Darfur region. There, she found empty shelves, expired medications and families who abruptly lost access to vital support after global aid cuts. Earlier this year, Save the Children shipments filled with medical supplies like antibiotics, deworming treatments, pain and fever medicines and antimalarials were stuck in the Middle East. More than 400,000 children were left without assistance. Despite global aid cuts and conflict, Janti saw community members stepping in where it was desperately needed.  Volunteers sourced local ingredients, established community kitchens and served hot meals to families who’ve lost so much during displacement. “It was deeply moving to witness volunteers coming together to cook for their community,” Janti says. Save the Children is supporting these locally led initiatives.   Not too far away, Janti visited a health clinic where our teams are meeting the needs of mothers, newborns and children facing malnutrition.  Since the conflict started three years ago, child mortality has risen by more than 12%. And in the past year alone, seven clinics were forced to close due to global funding cuts, adding more strain on health services.  Janti witnessed the obstacles aid workers have to overcome to deliver relief for families in need.  “I saw staff transporting medicines and vaccines across multiple conflict-affected areas, pre-positioning supplies ahead of the rainy season – when access will become even more restricted – and sustaining essential health services in places where systems have largely collapsed,” she recounts. Despite immense logistical challenges and shrinking resources, our teams – 95% of whom have been displaced themselves – continue to operate 50 health clinics across Darfur. Friend, the suffering in Sudan cannot be ignored. Together, we’re delivering lifesaving care where it’s needed most.
