Our housing bill, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, officially became the law of the land last month. Double woohoo! |
Donald Trump refused to even sign it. For some reason, he wanted nothing to do with helping lower housing costs for families. |
It didn't matter. Since Congress passed it and he took no action, it automatically went into effect while he was snoozing. |
This fight was never about Donald Trump. It was about whether Congress could act to make life more affordable for working families. |
And the Democrats delivered a new bipartisan law to lower costs and do just that. |
This is the biggest housing law in more than 30 years — a landmark bill that will build more homes, lower housing costs, and help more families achieve the dream of homeownership. |

Here’s what happened, Jeanne. Weeks ago, Republicans and Democrats passed this bill with overwhelming bipartisan support. I’m talking more than 90 percent of lawmakers in Congress voted for this housing affordability bill. |
Then Donald Trump decided to play politics. |
For 10 days, he threw a tantrum. Refusing to sign the bill because he wanted to use it as leverage to force Congress to pass his voter suppression bill, the SAVE Act. |
Trump even dismissed this housing bill as "a yawn." |
The good news is that the Constitution doesn't give a president a veto by neglect. If Congress is still in session and a president refuses to act on a bill for 10 days, that bill becomes law anyway. |
So, thanks for nothing, Donald. |
With the passage of this bill, we’re going to: |
• Build more homes by cutting unnecessary red tape and speeding up construction, giving families more affordable places to live.
• Expand homeownership by making it easier for working people to qualify for mortgages and buy their first home.
• Put families ahead of Wall Street by stopping private equity firms from buying up the single-family homes that should belong to people who want to live in them. |
This is worth celebrating, but I'm not confusing one victory for the finish line. |
There’s a whole lot more we need our government to do to actually address the issues that people are struggling with. The good news is that we just proved we CAN get legislation passed that actually meets the moment. We just need to continue to keep up the fight. |
