Our Republican opponent, Steve Hilton, announced his candidacy less than a month ago, but he's already raised at least $680,000 from donations of $5,000 or more.
In California races candidates are required to almost immediately report any donation of $5,000 or more, and so unfortunately, we're seeing in real time that Steve is picking up momentum. He's a former Fox News host who is tight with wealthy conservative donors, so we know he has the ability to raise serious money.
California's contribution limits are some of the highest in the country at $39,200 per person per election. So while Steve is collecting these massive checks, we need to make up the difference with grassroots donors.
