Tonight is NOT a deadlineLet me tell you how the budget works in the last few days of a campaign like ours.
Hey, it’s Sherrod. Happy Halloween. Normally, on the last day of the month, we’d be sprinting toward a budget deadline. Not today. For one, it’s a Saturday. The banks aren’t open. No one’s knocking down our door to make final payments. But don’t get me wrong. This might be the busiest day of the entire campaign. All across the state, thousands of volunteers are having high-stakes conversations. We’re making our final case, and helping people vote early while they still can. This election will be decided by what happens over the next 3 days. I want to be completely transparent with you. Even though we don’t need to hit a goal before we go to bed tonight, we are not yet finished raising money for this campaign. And for anyone wondering how we can spend funds that come in from now until Tuesday, let me give you a glimpse behind the curtain at how budgets work in the final stretch of an election. It’s more of an art than a science. Our finance team and our operations team are working hand in hand. They need to estimate how much they believe we’ll raise — and then decide where those funds are needed most urgently. It’s not ideal, but that sometimes means committing to a budget before we have funds in the bank. I’ve written to you about this before, like when we aired more ads than we had the money for a few weeks ago. Our team is getting inundated right now with final requests. Each of our 22 field offices have become little bee hives, buzzing nonstop until polls close. We’re adding campaign stops, expanding our final rallies before Election Day. And our digital team will have one last chance to adjust our ad buys on Monday — to make sure we’re doing everything we can to get our closing message in front of the voters who need to hear it. I want to be able to green-light any expense that will make winning on Tuesday a little more possible. I want our organizers to have everything they need. We want our events to be powerful. And I want to make sure we leave no stone unturned when it comes to making our case. The other side isn’t stopping, either. They’re spending millions every day to attack me and tear down this campaign. And even though I can’t stand it, the fact is we know those attacks have been effective at keeping this race a pure toss-up. So, no, we’re not closing the books at midnight tonight. (The only deadline you need to worry about is when your neighbors will stop handing out Halloween candy.) But we are pinching every penny to keep this operation humming along until the final votes are cast. That means I need to ask directly. Can you help in any way for one last push — either by taking on a volunteer shift to get out the vote (which you can do from anywhere) or by chipping in to make our last budgets possible? Thank you. You helped build this. You’re the reason we’ve been able to go toe to toe with the most wealthy and powerful interests in the country. That’s something I’ll always be grateful for. I believe we are going to win this race. And that would simply not be possible without people like you. Let’s finish the job. In solidarity, Sherrod Brown Before you click away! Republican spending in Ohio has reached $320 million, and Sherrod Brown is counting on your support to keep up. We can’t outspend them, but we can outwork them.
