Jeanne, on Juneteenth we commemorate the day the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas – two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
This day is a time to honor the sacrifices African Americans have made in the fight for freedom and equality, and an opportunity for us to celebrate the countless contributions they’ve made to our country's culture, history and identity. In Nevada, our Black community has been at the center of our history, from the Carson Valley ranchers to the workers who built the Hoover Dam and worked some of Las Vegas's first casinos. |
It is a joyful celebration but also a strong reminder that progress does not come easily or swiftly. While you and I are in this fight for progress, Donald Trump and extreme Republicans are making it worse with their latest attacks on voting rights.
The redistricting happening across America after the Supreme Court's recent ruling in Louisiana v. Calais is a blatant attempt to dilute Black representation. The so-called “SAVE America Act” and mail voting restrictions Trump is pushing are meant to keep people Trump doesn’t want voting away from the polls – including Black voters, Latino voters, AAPI voters, and anyone who disagrees with his policies. |
Freedom and democracy require constant protection – especially now, as the Trump administration works to dismantle decades of progress and send us back to a pre-Civil Rights Act America. That is why I fought – and won – the battle to stop the SAVE Act, and why I will continue to fight to protect our voting rights the moment we're able to win a Democratic Senate majority and gain some leverage in Congress. |
