Folks, from a very young age, my house was buzzing with conversation.
As I got older, I was part of those conversations about everything from gardening (my mother was an avid gardener) to ice skating (we lived next to a pond) to politics — local, state and national (my Dad taught government classes, and my mom eventually taught history in our local high school).
My parents volunteered on campaigns. All of which seemed totally normal to me — it’s what you did to do your part in a democracy. And that experience seeped into our home. My Dad would ask me from time to time: What are you doing for freedom today?
As a child, I didn’t know how to answer, so in between gulps of orange juice and whatever I was eating for breakfast that day I began pondering this big question.
As I helped my mom stuff envelopes with the local League of Women Voters, I don’t think I understood that such a mundane task was a critical form of citizenship. But I knew my dad’s question meant that we all had a responsibility to help shape the country we want to live in.
At a time when costs are through the roof and our health care is under constant threat and this administration is running rampant with corruption and lawlessness, I hope we are all asking ourselves that central question: What am I doing for freedom today?

We’re 51 days from the midterms and Trump is only ramping up his attacks on our Democratic candidates.
Republicans know that control of the Senate will come down to a razor-thin margin, and they’re doing everything they can to hold onto their majority.
Trump has already pressured states to rig congressional maps — likely chilling voter turnout. The GOP has already launched hundreds of millions in ad buys — flooding the airwaves all across the country with more lies and manipulation about Democrats in must-win battleground races. And there’s no telling what they will do next.
