During an event I recently hosted discussing Trump's first week in office, I was asked: "How do we get Democrats to talk about the cost of groceries?"
The answer: Run (and elect!) candidates who themselves experience the challenges that most working people in this country face. Too many families are being squeezed by the rising cost of big things—like healthcare, childcare, college, and housing, and by the cost of everyday purchases, from blueberries to bacon.
When I was in Congress, it was *news* that I brought up the price of bacon ($9.99) in a Democratic caucus meeting. When I talked about how inflation has been hitting my family, it seemed like the first time the toll of high prices had sunk in for some of my colleagues.
Democrats should also lean on and learn from folks who won in purple districts, like Truth to Power endorsed Josh Riley, who won in NY-19—a tough swing seat.
This year, if you know of someone in your community who should run for something (especially if they have not been in elected office before) ask them if they would consider running! Whether it's school board or Congress, every elected official makes a difference.
