They can afford to better protect patients and workers.
Sticking up to powerful bosses isn't easy! Yesterday I was proud to join striking SEIU UHW Kaiser workers who are standing up for themselves and the patients they serve on the picket line here in Irvine.
Don't let Kaiser tell you they can't afford to do better: They've reported more than $24 billion in profit over the last five years, including $3 billion in the first six months of this year.
The folks I met yesterday know Kaiser needs to put patients ahead of giant profits. Kaiser needs to invest in their workforce to address the current staffing shortages, which are leading to dangerously long wait times and poor patient outcomes.
Kaiser's bad faith bargaining is upsetting, but sadly not surprising. Giant health care corporations have a history of undermining their responsibilities to workers and patients alike. But unions like the SEIU also have a long history of taking them on—and winning. I'm proud to stand alongside our care workers in this fight.
