See, private health insurance companies have been using deceptive tactics to promote Medicare Advantage plans that leave patients without the care they need and cheat taxpayers.
Katie Porter is doing something about that — she's urging the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to collect more data, improve transparency, and hold insurers accountable.
This is important because some Medicare Advantage plans misreport data to get overpayment from Medicare — which costs us billions of dollars.
Plus, other insurers offer Medicare Advantage supplemental benefits that are purposely hard for consumers to understand. For example, among the 2,400 Medicare Advantage plans that had a hearing aid benefit in 2016, there were 123 unique variations of coverage.
With so many choices to navigate, it's difficult for patients to choose the right plan for their needs.
