Donald Trump is taking unprecedented action to seize total power for two more years.
He's pressuring Republican-led states like Texas to redraw their congressional map to hand him control of the House after the midterms. Trump knows he's on track to lose after imposing tariffs that raised prices, deploying the military in peaceful cities, and self-dealing to enrich his friends.
But in California, we're using our democracy to fight back. State leaders have put a proposal on the ballot that will let voters decide if California should redraw our congressional maps if Texas Republicans follow through with their plan to erase Democratic-held seats.
I believe that independent redistricting is the best approach possible, but right now we are so far from living in the best possible situation for our democracy. In fact, our democracy has never been under worse attacks.
Throughout history, we've made changes to meet the moment and address the challenges we've faced. It is absolutely appropriate for the people of California to say we want to do things differently when we see something immoral and wrong happening.
This isn't Trump's first attack on our democracy, and it won't be the last. As California's next governor, I'll be ready to keep standing up and fighting back. But I need your help to win this competitive race.
