I take a lot of pride in these emails being honest and transparent. Today, that means being honest that things aren't looking so hot.
Two December polls show me being pushed out of the primary. That means my time in Congress would come to an end.
Let me explain: California has a unique system. The top two vote-getters in March's primary advance to the general election in November. Early polling suggests that I am in a very strong position to win the general election, but the math in this primary is weird. A celebrity Republican is gaining traction in the polls, and he could advance to second place and keep us from qualifying for the general election.
So I have to ask: Can you contribute $5 today to help us run ads and reach key voters ahead of our March primary?

Right now is one of the most critical times for our fundraising. Soon, we're going to start running TV and digital ads all across the state, and that means millions of dollars will be leaving our bank account. Every week. If our fundraising doesn't pick up, we're going to have to scale back our ads even further, and I risk being unable to catch up.
But here's the good news: polls show that when voters learn about who I am and why I'm running, we pull ahead. I just need your help to communicate with voters.
Our end of quarter fundraising deadline is Sunday at midnight. After that, everyone will see how much we've raised. If it looks like our campaign is losing momentum, it will only embolden my opponents.
